Greenhouse Gas Emissions

As a large dairy producer, the Netherlands has set goals to the reduction of greenhouse gas emissions from the dairy sector. Inherent to those goals are the reduction and measurement of methane emission by dairy cows. KeyToxicology is experienced with different strategies to reduce (e.g. feeding) and measure (e.g. proxies, such as milk composition) methane emissions. With resource to scientific and field data, KeyToxicology can qualitatively and quantitatively predict methane emission from dairy cows. This is important to better understand the measures taken to achieve a more sustainable dairy chain.

Milk Composition

KeyToxicology has worked extensively with different methods to better understand and predict how milk composition is affected.

Understanding (natural) variations
Milk composition is dependent on intrinsic and external factors, such as genetics, lactation stage, health status of the cow and/or feeding. Probably due to important nutritional and technological properties associated with protein and milk fat, these are most researched components. KeyToxicology has extensive experience in understanding (natural) variation of macro- and micro-components of milk, which can be used to answer the client’s questions.
Optimizing feeding strategies
Feeding strategies can be applied to achieve different goals such as specificities of health requirements of the cow, improving yield or sustainability goals. Changes in feeding patterns have direct influence in milk composition and KeyToxicology has extensive experience in understanding and predicting the effects that changes in feeding can have in milk composition and possibly the consequences to nutritional and technological properties of milk.
